Library Thing

Library thing is another free site that you can use from any computer provided you have the interet. Unlike delicious and cite u like its all about recreational books. There are a lot of things you can do with this site. It lets you find books and add them to your library and sort them with tags. You can write book reviews, talk to other members, add your friends, search your local library...the list goes on. I think the best thing about this site is that it will make recommendations to you based on authors and genres of books you already have in your collection.

Unlike cite u like and delicious it doesnt include detailed reference information for books but is aimed as a more social site. I havent been able to transfer data from this site to endnote but if someone else finds out how, let me know!

  1. I like this site and I think it was the first of its kind. It clearly has a large followers group and its easy to see why. I think they were right to call themselves the Facebook and Myspace for booklovers since it's very social with lots of things to do and explore.

I couldn't find a way to transfer the date to Endnote either but I did find a way to export my library onto my computer. It's only available in Excel (or any spreadsheet I assume) format.

  2. Also cool is that LibraryThing can be integrated into a library's catalogue, something quite a few libraries have taken up. Also LibraryThing has recently released one million book covers for use in library catalogues free of charge.

Better than any of this is that it is fun. A great tool through which to meet and converse with like-minded readers.

  3. And now I use GuruLib. Offers the ability to catalogue your movies, music, games and other software, as well as books.
As I said in my blog, strictly recreational, and gloriously enjoyable.

  4. I think a lot of library catalogues could benefit from having LibraryThing. I just finished my evaluation of a catalogue and it had some book covers to go with its resources but no where near enough. There are a lot of people out there who remember things visually rather than remembering titles so I think its important for a library catalogue to include book covers.
